So in 2,000 years the total discrepancy is less than 1 day in the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

Only 12 of the animals came to bid him farewell, so Buddha honoured each of them with a year. The Chinese Lunar Calendar dates back to 2637BC. Every complete Chinese astrological cycle passes through each of the 12 signs 5 times, each of which has 1 'golden' year. The entire cycle therefore takes 60 years. The order of the signs was taken from the sequence in which the animals appeared to Buddha. The 1st of the animals was the Rat, then the Ox, then came the Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and lastly came the Pig.
